Training Datsun cogs
Imatek have supplied an IM10 with a custom-designed anvil to Daido Steel in Japan, a supplier of specialist steels to (amongst others) Nissan. The anvil converts the force from the falling mass into a torque which is applied from a driving gear to a driven gear. The rotation of the driving gear is measured using a very high resolution (360,000ppr) angular encoder.

The system is primarily designed for fatigue testing, looking at the initiation and propagation of cracks in the teeth of the gears. To deliver as much throughput as possible Imatek has provided the IM10 with a high-speed winch system.

Daido's requirement was for constant strain mode of working whereby the deflection of the gear teeth from impact to impact within a sequence is kept constant. Imatek developed special control loop software within the multiple impact function to achieve this.
